Do Collagen Supplements Work?
Here’s the problem with collagen supplements: the body needs to produce its own collagen. It can’t be handed collagen on platter, in an oral supplement or even a cream, and used to repair skin, tissue, bones, joints and ligaments. Although very few studies have been conducted on humans, what’s known fro sure is this: the body creates collagen from the foods it receives. Although taking vitamin C may help, natural sources or synthesized collagen supplements, such as those produced from chickens, have not been proven to have any affect on skin elasticity and have a yet unproven effective on arthritic jaunts. The problem is that when collagen supplements are taken in a capsule or liquid form, the stomach breaks it down to basic amino acids – which may be good but doesn’t guarantee the body will re-convert it to collagen or to making skin more elastic or joints more flexible.
Available information, from scientific research and medical sources, state that there is no evidence that taking any kind of collagen supplements will be effective in the body. The best protein supplements and collagen boosters are fruits and vegetables – what you eat makes collagen. A poor diet and hormonal factors will decrease collagen production as the body ages. But haven’t there been some recent breakthroughs in collagen supplements that work at a cellular level and that the body can absorb?
The latest BioCell liquids and chewable tablets are the top collagen supplements on the market, but despite claims that these most advanced preparations will help promote joint and skin collagen, to date there is no solid evidence, no studies using human participants, that suggest there are any benefits of using either oral or topical collagen preparations.
If taking collagen supplements won’t help, then what’s the best protein supplement to encourage natural collagen production is the body? That’s a good question because collagen is a protein that diminishes as we age. Providing the body with the tools to build protein can be done by increasing amino acid intake not through taking the best protein supplement powder or shake but by eating soy, seeds, beans, nuts and a variety of fish and seafood. Antioxidants are also important because they help to fight the free radicals that are responsible for aging, but again these don’t come in powders or supplements (at least not the best forms) but in fruits and veggies. By drinking lots of water and fresh orange juice, eating whole apples with the skin, and making it a habit to eat leafy green salads everyday, the body will produce natural collagen without having to take expensive collagen supplements or requiring you to search for the best protein supplement products.
There’s no instant collagen building formula that’s tested and clinically proven to be effective on humans – not yet at least, but everyone has collagen and protein within their reach, in their kitchens, in the food choices made each day.
